What If I Can’t Do the Movements?

If you’ve ever watched a CrossFit workout, you may have had this thought:

“There’s no way I can do that.”

Pull-ups.
Barbell lifts.
Box jumps.
Overhead movements.

From the outside, it can look like everyone in the gym already knows what they’re doing.

And if you can’t do those movements yet, it’s easy to feel like you don’t belong there.

But here’s the truth:

Most people can’t do a lot of those movements when they first start.


You’re Not Supposed to Know How to Do Everything

This is one of the biggest misconceptions.

People assume they need to walk in already knowing how to:

  • Do pull-ups
  • Lift with perfect form
  • Move confidently through every workout

That’s not the expectation.

The gym isn’t a place where you prove what you already know.

It’s where you learn.


Every Movement Has a Starting Point

What you see someone doing now is usually the result of time and practice.

Not where they started.

Every movement can be broken down into simpler steps.

For example:

  • A pull-up might start as a ring row
  • A push-up might start on a box
  • A barbell lift might start with a PVC pipe or light weight

You’re still learning the movement…

Just at a level that makes sense for you.


Scaling Is Built Into Everything

In CrossFit, workouts aren’t one-size-fits-all.

They’re designed to be adjusted.

That’s called scaling.

Scaling means:

  • Changing the movement
  • Adjusting the weight
  • Modifying the range of motion
  • Altering the volume

So instead of trying to force yourself into something you can’t do yet…

The workout meets you where you are.


Using Assistance Is Normal

You’ll see people using:

  • Bands for pull-ups
  • Boxes for push-ups
  • Lighter weights for lifts

That’s not a sign of being “behind.”

That’s part of the process.

These tools help you:

  • Build strength
  • Learn proper movement
  • Progress safely

Over time, those same movements start to feel more natural.


Progress Happens Gradually

You don’t go from “can’t do it” to “can do it” overnight.

It’s built step by step.

You might:

  • Learn the setup one week
  • Improve control the next
  • Add a little more range or resistance over time

And eventually…

You realize you’re doing something that once felt impossible.


Learning Is the Point

This is what makes the biggest difference.

You’re not expected to have everything figured out.

You’re expected to be learning.

That means:

  • Trying new movements
  • Making adjustments
  • Improving little by little

Mistakes aren’t a problem.

They’re part of the process.


What This Looks Like in a Class

When you walk into a class, you’re not left on your own.

Coaches are there to:

  • Explain the movements
  • Demonstrate proper technique
  • Help you find the right variation
  • Make adjustments as you go

If something doesn’t feel right, it gets changed.

If something is too difficult, it gets scaled.

If something clicks, it gets built on.


You’re Not Holding Anyone Back

Another common concern is:

“I don’t want to slow the class down.”

That’s not how it works.

Everyone is doing their own version of the workout.

At their own level.

At their own pace.

You’re not expected to keep up with anyone else.

You’re expected to focus on your own progress.


Everyone Started Somewhere

Every person in the gym has had a first day.

A first attempt.

A moment where something felt unfamiliar or difficult.

That doesn’t make you different.

It makes you part of the process.

Not being able to do certain movements isn’t a reason to stay away.
